REVIEW OF ALIC ANNUAL MEETING

HELD MAY 3-5, 2009

MESSAGE FROM THE PAST PRESIDENT

Tracy L. Rich

2009 Annual Meeting:  The Association’s 2009 Annual Meeting was held May 3-5 at the Hotel del Coronado in San Diego, California.  The 147th meeting of the members of the Association was well attended, very successful and fulfilled the essential purposes of the Association – learning from and with others and furthering the professionalism of the life insurance bar.

A hearty welcome was extended to approximately 177 attendees and guests at the traditional opening reception on Sunday night, where President Rich introduced 10 new members to the assembled members of the Association.  Immediately prior to the welcoming reception, new members gathered to meet personally with Board members, section chairs and the officers of the Association.

President Rich’s introduction at the General Session included an overview of the two days and a brief explanation of how the current economic environment influenced the choice of the theme for the meeting “Life Insurance Industry in the New Economic Paradigm.”  That introduction was followed by a keynote address which was delivered by Kevin O’Connor, Partner, Bracewell & Giuliani and former Associate Attorney General of the United States (2008-09), the United States Attorney for Connecticut (2002-2008), the Chief of Staff for the United Stated Attorney General (2007), and the Senior Counsel at the U.S. Security & Exchange Commission, Division of Enforcement (1995-1997).  Mr. O’Connor’s presentation was entitled Insuring Justice:  Current Enforcement and Regulatory Initiatives and their Impact on the Life Insurance Industry.  Mr. O’Connor’s speech was well received and set the stage for the very substantive presentations which followed.

On Monday afternoon, the traditional ALIC social/sports events were held.  In addition to the usual golf, tennis and croquet, members also had an opportunity to participate in beach volleyball for the second time.  All participants seemed to enjoy the venue, the weather and the camaraderie.

On Monday evening, the Association hosted its traditional dinner.  This year, the dinner was held on the lawn of the Hotel del Coronado which provided a dramatic setting with a full view of the ocean.  During the dinner, William A. Wilson was awarded the Buist M. Anderson Distinguished Service Award.  Bill addressed the attendees after receiving the award and expressed his deep gratitude for the award and the time he spent in the industry.

Tuesday’s meeting commenced with two concurrent breakout sessions presented by the Tax (Financial and Tax Policy Risks Presented by Certain Features of Life Insurance and Annuity Products) and Investment (Credit Default Swaps and the Insurance Industry) Sections.  Next, a General Session presentation was held with a topic on E-Discovery:  Addressing the Information Logjam Without Getting Rolled.  This topic was followed by the annual Business Meeting which included reports from Phillip E. Stano, Secretary/Treasurer of the Association, and Chip Delano who gave his final ABA delegate report.  Due to the absence of Past President Karen Shaff, Phil Stano presented the report of the Association’s Nominating Committee, after which the members unanimously elected Dennis Schoff as President-Elect, and Carl Wilkerson was elected as Secretary/Treasurer.  In accordance with the Constitution of the Association and by virtue of her office as President-Elect, Michele Gatto succeeded to the office of President and became the 81st President of the Association.  Newly elected members of the Board of Governors are:  Dan Fischer, Bill Forgione, Maggie Levy, Teresa Rasmussen.

The Business Meeting was followed by two additional General Session presentations entitled Ethics, and Significant Trends in Financial Services Litigation.  After the presentations were concluded, President Rich reminded attendees that the next Annual Meeting would be held at Chateau Elan in Braselton, Georgia on May 22-25, 2010.  The meeting was then adjourned and all speakers were invited to attend a reception in their honor hosted by the officers and governors of the Association.

Attendees were fortunate to have as presenters some of the most knowledgeable practitioners in their fields; their insights and prepared materials provided attendees with both excellent scholarship and sound, practical advice.
